Organisational Roles

Andrew Goodall - Head of Care

It is the head of care responsibility to ensure that the students ar being provided the highest level of learning with the highest level of care provided for them. What is also expected from Mr Goodall is to report back to the college how the students are responding to their education and to offer suggestion to how to improve the quality of learning.

Rob Haywood - Care lecturer

Rob is responsible for delievering lectures and assessing the students so they can learn and develop their potentional. Mr Haywood is also expected to motivate the students and engage with them to provide their maximal capability

Care staffs

Essentially the care staffs have a lesser but similar role as Mr Haywood in providing care for the students.

Security guards-

Important to the college, keeping the students belongings safe but most of all if there is any problem that requires urgent assistance, they are first aid trained and they are very quick to respond.

Solutions

Improving the College website. Adding links to the special educational needs and talking about the benefits Chesterfield College can offer new students could increase the chance of gaining more students, and more students equal more opportunities for learning difficulties students.

Improving the public awareness. By this I would suggest emailing/phoning local newspapers for a journalist to interview special needs students, in which could feature in Derbyshire Times or Sheffield Star. Also Peak 107 is the local radio station, having a on air interview could raise awareness as many work places and people driving around Chesterfield listen to the station.

Main Problems

The main problem of special education is the lack of advertising and awareness.
Because Chesterfield College is government funded, the problem facing Chesterfield College is gaining students. For this to work, Chesterfield College have to sell themselves at post 16 (school leavers). Chesterfield College have to show sixteen year old school leavers that Chesterfield College is the right and best move for them, not only education wise but for the most enjoyable student life. They will also have to prove that they will provide their highest care they can offer and that thy will provide transport for the special students.

Organisational Theory

Chesterfield College is based at 3 locations Main site, Clowne Campus and Tapton House. My work placement is based at Clowne Campus, Clowne is a recently build Campus and is designed in a crescent moon fashion building. This design is a new trend to attract more students to come to the new facility. Making the building look clean and up to date is an important image that Chesterfield College wants to give off. This could then attract investors into the college or more students, which then would get the college more funding. The design is functional and easy access from the car park makes it great for disabled students in wheelchairs. The canteen is located on the bottom floor with easy access. There is a lift available to everyone to reach the 1st and 2nd floor. The library and the staff room is located on the bottom floor which makes it more friendly for students to drop in and ask tutors questions. The main office for the Campus runner is located to the far left of the site on the bottom floor, which makes it very easy to ask questions or to find to speak about important matters. This type of physical structure is a major strength for Chesterfield College as the building is up to date a new making the foundations to build success upon easier.

Social Hierarchy-
The structure of Chesterfield College is like a pyramid one main head with people working below helping the running- at the head is head Mr F smith he is the chairman, then Mr J Webber who is the chairman of Audit Committee will report to the main chairmen. The people who work under Mr J Webber are professor P Garrahan, Councillor D Chapman, Mr W Ervine and Mr R Kay. Then it goes Mr M Hadfield he is the chairman of remuneration under him is Mr T Hughes and Mr G Bargh. Mr G Leyland is the chairman of art, design and creative industries. After that Mrs J McArthur who is the principal she has working for her Ms R Williams, Sue Allsop, Sam Ulyatt, Ian Morris, Molly Bagshaw and Miriam Darling. All these people will have to report to Mr F smith who is the main chairman of Chesterfield College. This can have its strength’s and weaknesses. The strengths being that there’s a good structure of who’s in charge or where to go to if needed, also it’s consistent and co-ordinated according to David Ingram (2011) it is vital to have a organisational structure otherwise employees will find it difficult to know who to report to. This is why I believe Chesterfield College has a great structure as there are many leaders to ask any questions and they can report it back to the main leader/chairman. The weaknesses of this however is that its time consuming if a question is needed to be answered by the chairmen as he would be rarely seen around college so it could take days to weeks to get an answer from him. Also it will be hard to get your point across as one person may think it’s a good idea what you have but another doesn’t.

Achievement Culture-
Chesterfield College is an achievement culture, this is where rewards will be given to the college based on results e.g. coaching department everyone passes with 70% plus this could mean more funding to the college given by the government for excellent performance. This then will result in better equipment and facilities for the students to use.
It is run by the government rules so this will be a term called “process” because the college has to abide by the government rules.
At the college there are certain role models for the students to look up to, one of these role models are our tutors they are always willing to help and give a good impression on teaching which can spur students onto becoming teachers. Behavior is not really rewarded in the college so this could be an area for improvement, the only reward would be vocal or in the form of a packet of sweets if the student does well and the tutor has to pay for that out of their own pocket.

Technology
The college uses a unique email system, which allows students to connect to tutors this, allows a tutor to send work/presentations and other useful information via the email quick and easy. The teachers can also use it to connect to other tutors, which is a great way to get information from each other if needed. Chesterfield college also uses a website called VLE this allows the tutors to upload all there classes e.g. presentations that have been delivered to students in class, online which can help the students if they loose vital material needed for their assignments. This is a really good thing for Chesterfield College as it shows people who want to join the college that it has an up to date system, and an easy access to talk to their tutors if needed. This technology can help the college gain more students, which will then bring in much needed funding

SWOT Analysis

SWOT Analysis

SWOT analysis - an analysis of strengths and weaknesses of the organization and the opportunities and threats from the external environment. «S» and «W» relate to the company, and «O» and «T» to the external environment of the organization. According to the results of situation analysis can be assessed, whether the company internally and resources to realize the opportunities and confront threats, and what internal weaknesses require early removal.

In my opinion, most importantly during the SWOT analysis as well as other research and strategic planning, it is not the crust of the diploma and the ability to think, the ability to look at your organization standing up challenges and problems "look the part."

If you are able to move away from their subjective assessments, and any personal assessments are always subjective, carefully go through the parameters of SWOT, evaluating them as if from outside the organization, taking on the role of potential or actual buyer / customer, competitor, just a bystander then you deals with the SWOT analysis. Special Education for the base version of the analysis is not necessary.

Strengths

Good facilities – functional campuses that offers a wide range of access to students

Location – near the motorway

Qualified staff and qualified first aiders.

Chesterfield College is well funded to achieve target of several outcomes

Weaknesses

Lack of public awareness – with funding cuts in education.

Reliability – Relies on schools to produce Higher Level students but many schools now have a 6th form

Opportunities

Advertising – improve the Chesterfield College website which means adding more about the initative.

Gain awareness – any sources to gain awareness about the college.

Partnerships – try and establish partnerships with regulated educational companies, e.g. change4life, sport coach UK etc.
Threats

Cuts – if funding receives further cuts, staff may be made redundant.

Strengths - There are several facilities that covers the whole aspects of chesterfield college such as joinery, sports, beauty, plumbing etc which enable the students to access a wide range of learning resources that they can use to help them achieve their capability. All of their campuses are very accessible with the main site and tapton being near the town centre & train station whilst clowne campus is next to the M1 motorway.
The staffs are equipped to provide their teaching and guidance + many of them are qualified first aiders. There are also security in place to provide safety of the students.
Weaknesses - There are lack of public awareness now that there are funding cuts which disables students to pay for their education and also disables chesterfield college to fund for advertisement and open day. There are many students now who opts to stay in the 6th form at schools which means the college loses out on potential students.

Opportunities - Chesterfield college can work with several initiatives and schools to promote the college (partnerships) and they can advertise those partnerships through the websites or processed documents.

Threat - However, due to the Public Spending Cuts, Chesterfield College cannot reach their potential and must cut down the wide range of variety service they offers.

The political sector impacts Chesterfield College through funding. The government started introducing cuts to special education in colleges and school in 2010 and is still at this present point cutting back funding for education and sports. This means Chesterfield College cannot offer all of their services to a wide range of special needs students.
Economically the organisation is free as special education students wont be paying for their education as they are being government funded and they are studying through term time it is not a yearlong running business, therefore staff won’t have to delegate all there time to the special educational needs.

The social sector influences are the media. Special education is now a big thing for all colleges as there have been many awareness that disabled people as just as capable of enabled people. This impacts the response from the public and offers disabled students the highest standard education there is.

Technology is a good source of advertising, something that Chesterfield College doesn’t do well currently. The college website has no mention of disability learning, therefore nobody knows a lot about it. Advertising the students, showing pictures and their activities could increase the awareness, popularity, reputation and availability of the college. This could incise future students to want to attend the college and get education.

What is expected of me:

1. To deliever lectures comprising of simple and intellectual terms to enable a better reading and understanding for the special needs students

2. To deliever physical activity as part of promoting fitness and keeping them active.

3. To build up their porfolio which is to be marked by Andrew Goodall- Head Of Care Department in April.

I hope to deliever as much as I can into enabling the students have success.

I will need to address the disadvantages which are:

1. Students HAVE NOT participated in any fitness activity whatsover in their life (Average age: 17)

2. Wheelchair users are disabled to reach their full extent compared to an average student.

3. It will be essential to have a crash-course (intenstive) teaching to enable them to be educated.

4. Communication may break down which will be extremely difficult to provide and deliever a high care for them.

5. Most of them are very un-motivated and have a extremely low self esteem, it will be an challenge to improve their outlook but it is a challenge I am relishing.
